Ich sag’s wie es ist: ich bin ein Netflix-Junkie. Und deswegen fällt meine Liste an Film- und Serienhighlights des Jahres auch länger aus als die anderen Faves & Discoveries 2021. Da ich dieses Jahr auch wesentlich mehr Filme gesehen habe als sonst, hat es nur eine Serie auf die Liste geschafft.
Here is the thing: I’m a Netflix-junkie. And that’s the reason this list of my film- and series-highlights of last year is a bit longer than the other Faves & Discoveries of 2021. I also had a year of watching more films than series, so there is only one series that has made it onto the list this time.
I. SANDITON
Als Jane Austen Fan war es für mich lange überfällig diese Serien-Adaption ihres letzten, unfertigen Romans zu gucken. Ich habe das Romanfragment erst nachdem ich die Serie gesehen habe gelesen und muss sagen, es liefert nicht sonderlich viel Material, aber die Serie hat wirklich das Beste daraus gemacht und noch eine Schippe drauf gelegt.
Charlotte ist eine freche und intelligente Protagonistin, wie wir es nicht anders von Jane Austen gewohnt sind. Ihr Aufenthalt in dem aufstrebenden Kurort Sanditon, ihre erste Liebe, ihre Freundschaft mit der schwarzen Neureichen Miss Lamb, die Familienintrigen, der Witz, Missverständnisse, Skandale der Highsociety – es ist ein wahres Fest. Und die Tatsache, dass die Serie nach der Absetzung durch das Lautwerden der Fangemeinde nun eine zweite Staffel (und dritte) bekommt – großartig!

As the big Jane Austen fan that I am, it was high time for me to finally watch the series adaptation of her last, unfinished novel. I read the manuscript-fragment after watching the show and I have to say it doesn’t offer a lot of material, but the series really made the best of it, and then some.
Charlotte is a cheeky and intelligent protagonist, just like all of Jane Austen’s other heroines. Her stay at the up and coming seaside resort Sanditon, her first time falling in love, her friendship with the Black newly-rich Miss Lamb, the family schemes, the fun, the misunderstandings, the high society’s scandals – it’s such a joy to watch. And the fact that the series was renewed for two (maybe three) more seasons after the fanbase protested it’s cancellation online – amazing!

II. LAST CHRISTMAS
Hab ich wirklich einen Weihnachtsfilm im August geguckt? Auf jeden Fall! Ich habe 2020 schon das Genre der Weihnachts-Romcoms für mich entdeckt und wenn dann auch noch mein Crazy Rich Asians Liebling Henry Golding mitspielt, konnte ich gar nicht widerstehen. Der Film ist lustig, berührend, süß und hat mich mit seinem Plot-twist total überrumpelt. Ich bin danach wirklich schreiend durch die Wohnung gelaufen, weil ich gar nicht drauf klar gekommen bin. Und genau deswegen hat Last Christmas auch verdient an dieser Stelle erwähnt und weiterempfohlen zu werden.
Did I really watch this Christmas movie in August? Absolutely! I kinda got into the genre of Christmas romcoms back in 2020 and then they also cast Crazy Rich Asians heartthrob Henry Golding? I’m sorry, but I couldn’t resist. The movie is funny, emotional, sweet and the plot twist at the end totally blindsided me. I really ran through our flat screaming about the movie because I couldn’t get over it. And that’s exactly why Last Christmas had to be mentioned and recommended here.
III. DU SIE ER & WIR
Selten produziert die deutsche Filmindustrie mal einen wirklich guten Film. Aber Du Sie Er & Wir ist einer davon. Er hat sich eine Weile auf meiner Netflix-Watchlist rumgetrieben, weil ich immer dachte: klingt interessant, aber grade habe ich nicht so Lust. Zum Glück hab ich ihn Ende des Jahres ENDLICH angeschaut. Das Durcheinander das entsteht als Ben, Maria, Nils und Janina beschließen einen Partner*innentausch durchzuführen und sich nach ihrem Experiment im Strandhaus von Nils Familie wieder zu treffen, ist wirklich eine großartige Kakophonie. Die Charaktere sind ausgefeilt und super gespielt. Eine Meisterleistung, nicht nur wenn es um das Drehbuch geht, sondern auch die Fragen die aufgeworfen werden, die Diskussionen die zwischen den Charakteren entstehen, über Liebe, Beziehungen, Monogamie und Sex, die Dynamiken die sich verschieben und den*die Zuschauer*in mitreißen, zum lachen und zum nachdenken bringen. Ich bin wirklich total begeistert.
It’s very rare that the German film industry produces a really good film. But Du Sie Er & Wir is one of the few really good ones. It kinda floated around on my Netflix watchlist for a while, because I always felt like I would enjoy it, but wasn’t in the mood at the time. Luckily I finally watched it at the end of the year. The complete chaos that breaks out between Ben, Maria, Nils and Janina when they decide to switch partners for a while and then meet up at Nils family’s beach house by the end of their experiment, is a great cacophony. The characters are created in a great way and perfectly brought to life by the cast. It’s a true masterpiece, not only when it comes to the writing/script, but also the questions that watching the movie evokes, the discussions about about love, relationships, monogamy and sex that the characters have, the dynamics shifting; all of it pulls you in, makes you laugh and think. Watching it truly thrilled me.
IV. HOME AGAIN
Natürlich darf in dieser Auflistung nicht meine alljährliche Lieblingsromcom fehlen. LetztesJahr ist das Home Again. Es geht um die Tochter eines erfolgreichen Hollywoodregisseurs, die nach der Trennung von ihrem Mann zurück nach L.A. kommt und kurzerhand drei junge, aufstrebende Filmemacher bei sich einziehen lässt. Natürlich geht es um Liebe, um Familie, um Freundschaft, sich Neu-erfinden.. Aber für mich geht es vor allem um die unglaublichen Funken zwischen Reese Witherspoon und Pico Alexander. Und im seine Grübchen, denn die sind phänomenal (ich bin immer noch verliebt).
This wouldn’t be a favourites list a lá Kaja, if there wasn’t a favourite romcom as well. Last year it was Home Again. It’s about the daughter of a famous Hollywood director, and her moving back to L.A. after splitting up. It just so happens that she lets three young, up and coming film makers move in with her. Obviously the film is all about love, family, friendships and finding yourself. But for me it’s mostly about the amazing sparks between Reese Witherspoon and Pico Alexander. And about his dimples, to be completely honest with you, because those are phenomenal (I’m still obsessed with him).
V. PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN
Das einzige Mal das ich 2021 im Kino war, war um diesen Film zu sehen. Es war das Masketragen und ängstlich sein (wegen der anderen Menschen) auf jeden Fall wert. Ich glaube, ich kenne kaum einen besseren künstlerischen Umgang mit der #MeToo-Thematik, mit dem verzweifelten Kampf um Gerechtigkeit… Noch dazu zeigt Promising Young Woman mit seinem herausragenden Drehbuch und dem perfekten Cast. Der „good guy“ mutiert zum Mitwisser, was die Frage aufwirft, welchem Mann Protagonistin Cassie überhaupt noch trauen kann auf ihrem Streifzug nach Gerechtigkeit für ihre beste Freundin. All das wird in eine einzigartige, zuckerwattenfarbene Ästhetik gepackt, mit präzisen Dialogen und einer guten Ladung weiblicher Popmusik. Somit wird Promising Young Woman zu einem fabelhaften, feministischen Kunstwerk, das einem die Augen öffnet.
The only time I went to the cinema in 2021, was when I watched this film. All the wearing a mask and feeling anxious because of all the other people around us was more than worth it. I don’t think I know a better artistic approach to #MeToo and the desperate fight for justice… On top of that, Promising Young Woman is super well written and is brought to life by an outstanding cast. Der „good guy“ becomes just another asshole, making it hard to answer the question which man protagonist Cassie can trust on her quest to getting justice for her best friend. All of this is set in a unique, cotton candy coloured aesthetic, with on-point dialogues and a good chunk of female artists’ pop music. That’s what makes Promising Young Woman an eye-opening, feminist masterpiece.
